Caring for Your Invisalign Trays in 3 Steps

Published on September 3rd, 2020

Once you’ve taken the first step towards straightening your teeth with clear aligners, you’ll want to work to make the most of your treatment. Taking excellent care of your teeth and Invisalign trays can help keep the treatment on-track and your smile in good condition. Here are some important things to remember to do while undergoing Invisalign orthodontics close to Chicago.

1. Rinse Your Aligners Every Time You Remove Them

Whether or not you’re eating, it’s important to rinse your Invisalign each time they are removed from your mouth. It takes only a moment but can make a significant difference when it comes to fending off the buildup of harmful bacteria throughout the day.

2. Diligently Clean Your Teeth After Meals

We recommend brushing and flossing after each and every meal. Failing to do so can result in food debris, sugar, and bacteria to become stuck between your aligners and teeth. Not only can this harm your teeth, it can stain your aligner and cause it to look dull or yellowish. If you decide to have a meal but have forgotten your toothbrush, swishing with water is a fine alternative.

2. Use Anti-Bacterial Soap for a Deep Clean

When it’s time to freshen up your aligners, be sure to grab an anti-bacterial soap that is also clear and fragrance-free. A colored soap may (as you can guess) dye your aligners—imagine walking around with blue teeth the next day! You can use a soft toothbrush to clean your trays, but be very gentle as hard brushing may scratch them. Toothpaste can also damage your aligners, so only use it on your teeth!
