Answering Your Root Canal Questions

Published on August 17th, 2020

Many people have a strong aversion to getting a root canal. As affordable dentists serving the Chicago community, we understand! In recent years, dentistry has come a long way in terms of making procedures like root canals much more comfortable for patients who need them. Today, we’ll demystify root canal treatments by answering questions we’re often asked.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

Root canals are most commonly used to treat teeth whose pulp has become inflamed or infected. Infections can be caused by repeated dental procedures, deep decay, faulty crowns, or damage to the tooth. Root canals get a bad rap, but they are often instrumental in saving a person’s natural tooth!

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

Most root canal procedures are completed in 30-60 minutes. If a case is more complex, the root canal can take up to 90 minutes. Patients are typically able to return to work or school the following day. With proper aftercare, any discomfort you feel after your procedure should subside within 3-4 days.

What Foods/Drinks Can I Have After My Root Canal?

Because the area will be sensitive after your procedure, it’s best to stick to soft foods that do not require much chewing. Think: eggs, yogurt, pudding, tuna salad, mashed potatoes, soup, and pancakes. Spicy food can also be irritating immediately after your procedure. We recommend avoiding alcoholic beverages as well as this may interfere with your recovery.
