All About Dental Sealants

Published on March 20th, 2020

We all know by now that we should be brushing (twice daily) and flossing (once daily), but these tasks are only a small part of your lifelong, dental-care journey. Setting and keeping good habits also includes proper nutrition and preventative care! Today we’re talking about dental sealants, a preventative treatment that can help reduce your risk of tooth decay by 80% in your molars, where 9 in 10 cavities are found.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are protective coatings that can be painted onto an at-risk tooth, such as the rear molars. At our office in Lakeview, we use a tooth-colored acrylic material to create dental sealants. Most often, sealants are applied to the chewing surface of the tooth as a preventative measure. In some cases, a dentist may also recommend a sealant as part of treatment for a tooth in the early stages of decay.

Who is a Good Candidate?

People of any age can benefit from our Lakeview dental sealants. They’re especially important for those most at risk of developing tooth decay: children. Most often, sealants are recommended for kids near age 6, when their first molars appear, and kids near age 12, when second molars appear. This added level of protection can seriously reduce cavities, helping kids be kids while their oral health habits develop.

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?

Depending on the diet and lifestyle of the individual, dental sealants can last for several years before needing to be reapplied. During regular dental exams, your dentist will be able to determine their wear and may recommend a re-application.
