Caring For Your Teeth During Pregnancy

Proper prenatal care is important for a healthy pregnancy. Did you know that maintaining good oral hygiene is an important part of prenatal care? Oral health is fundamental to the health of our teeth and gums, but it can also have an impact on pregnant women and their unborn children.

Pregnancy can make women more prone to gum disease and cavities, due to things like changes in hormones, diet, and experiencing morning sickness. It should be noted that according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), between 60%-75% of pregnant women have gingivitis. Gingivitis can cause infection and bone loss when left untreated. Some information also suggests that periodontitis has been associated with premature birth and low birth weight.

During pregnancy, mothers who carry high amounts of bacteria that cause cavities risk transmitting these same oral bacteria to their children after birth. This could encourage cavities in early childhood.

Do Not Hesitate to Call Your Dentist

Proper dental care is vital to ensuring the health of any mother and her unborn baby. It is highly recommended that mothers-to-be see their dentists regularly, and promptly communicate any concerns they have about their oral health. Such concerns could include tooth sensitivity, bleeding or swollen gums, or any new issues that arise during pregnancy. Dental appointments should be a regular part of your prenatal care. Do not think that just because your teeth are something you never associated with reproductive health before, that your oral health and hygiene can’t affect your pregnancy.
