After Extraction Care

Published on January 30th, 2019

Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth is beyond repair and needs to be removed. At Family Dental Care, our team will assist you with any extractions in Lakeview. Before removing the tooth, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. After your extraction, be sure to follow our tips below in order to have a fast healing time.

To Stop Bleeding

To control bleeding after a tooth extraction, a blood clot should form. Biting on gauze after the extraction for around 30 minutes will help the clot form. Once the clot as formed, do not disturb it or else your healing will be prolonged. Avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking, using a straw and be careful when brushing other teeth in the area for at least 72 hours.

To Relieve Pain/Swelling

Depending on what kind of extractions you have in Lakeview, you should take pain medication as prescribed. If you are experiencing high levels of pain, even with prescribed pain reliever, contact us immediately. Using ice can help to reduce swelling and it should go away after 48 hours.

Oral Hygiene

You can resume your normal dental care routine 24 hours after a tooth extraction. Remember to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once per day. Returning to your routine will help speed up the healing process and lowers the chance of infection.

If you experience heavy bleed, swelling for more than three days or any other negative reactions after an extraction, contact us right away.
